International Examination for Royal College of Surgeons held at AU

The College of Dentistry at Ajman University (AU) recently hosted the examinations for the Member of the Faculty of Dentistry Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (MFDRCSI) in the United Arab Emirates, in its Ajman campus. The MFD RCSI is an examination that can be taken by dentists at any stage of their career: for example, newly qualified, those hoping to undertake specialist training, those working in general practice and has two parts. This year 80 people from around the world sat for their exams at AU campus.
Ajman University Dental College’s Internship training program was one of the first to be recognized and approved by an organization dedicated to excellence in surgery, training surgeons and setting their examinations in the UAE. The dental Internship training program was recognized and approved by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland as a training requirement to sit for the MFDRCSI exam in 2004.
The first Part 1 examination was conducted in the College in 2004. Since then numerous candidates from around the GCC and African region have sat and passed the examination, which is held twice in a year in the Ajman campus. The part 2 examination will be held only once a year in any overseas center. The part 2 examination was held over two days and involved examiners from the Faculty of Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the College of Dentistry in Ajman University.
The examinations were witnessed by Dr. John Marley, Dean Faculty of Dentistry in RCSI, Mr. Sean Sheridan , international postgraduate Inspector & Recognition Committee Chair along with
Dr. Albert lung , Chief Examiner. Prof. Salem Abu Fanas, Dean, College of Dentistry, Ajman University and faculty members were also present.
‘The possibility to sit for the MFDRCSI examination locally had a positive effect on the number of dental surgeons in the country and the region. It is indeed a privilege for the College of Dentistry to be recognized as one of the few ‘overseas’ training and examination center by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and we are proud to be associated with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland’, said Prof. Salem Abu Fanas. The visiting faculty and examiners credited the success of the examination to the efficient organization of the team from College of Dentistry and the facilities of Ajman University.
The Dental College at AU is also recognized as a training center that fulfills the clinical prerequisites of the Fellowship of the Faculty of Dentistry Examinations in Operative and Restorative Dentistry, FFDRCSI (ORD). Graduates who qualify with an MSc degree in Restorative Dentistry from the College of Dentistry of AU will be eligible to sit for the FFD examination in Ireland. The Fellowship of the Faculty of Dentistry is internationally acknowledged as the highest College award in dentistry. Prof. Salem Abu Fanas added that the College is the first dental college that caters to oral and dental health in the UAE and that its graduates have become fruitful doctors, administrators in the government services, respected academicians or involved in the dental/ medical commerce to become successful entrepreneurs.
